When You Reach Me

.The title of this book is When You Reach Me and is written by Rebbeca Stead.  Total, this book has 199 pages.

.The genre of this book is mystery, and was the Newberry award winner of 2009.

.Proof that this is a mystery book is in these three quotes. The first quote is, “Our apartment door was unlocked when I got home from school that Friday, which was strange.  More than strange, actually-it had never happened before.” The second quote is “‘It is weird’, someone with the key wouldn’t have to ask where the key is. It makes no sense.” And finally, “I know you have shared my first note. I ask you not to share the others. Please. I do not ask this for myself.” These are all very mysterious and don’t make much sense at first, but become more clear later in the story.

.This book is about a girl named Miranda, who is getting anonymous mysterious notes that predict things before they happen. Soon strange things start to happen; like their house getting robbed but the only thing stolen is one shoe. Eventually everything starts falling into place and Miranda realizes that her best friend’s life is at stake and she might be too late to do anything.

.The main characters of this book are Miranda, Marcus, and Sal. Miranda is smart, clear minded, and determined. Marcus is a genius who is is very brave and is obsessed with the concept of time travel. Finally Sal is some one who is scared of older kids and loves sports.

.The themes of this book are mainly time travel and friendship.

.These three quotes prove the themes. First, “Time Travel. Some people think it’s possible.” Secondly, “Soon he’ll also realize that he’s going to discover the secret of traveling through time, which is a thing so incredible that most people would consider it a miracle.” And my final quote is, “And I didn’t know it yet, but it was also the end of my friendship with Sal.”

.The Setting of this book is modern day New York City. I think this sentence is descriptive, “One block from West End Avenue to Broadway, one block from Broadway to Amsterdam, past the laughing man on our corner, and then half a block to our lobby door.

.I think if you removed the laughing man from this story it would change dramatically, Sal would be dead, and many mysterious elements in the story would be removed, along with many of the characters lives being changed.
